Carbon capture, or sequestration, increasingly is touted as a potential solution for big, fat greenhouse gas emissions.

The process could prove important for Canada, a robust energy producer with an economy dependent on spewing emissions by the megatonne.

More than a year ago, Liberal leader Stéphane Dion told a business audience that he foresees a future in which Canada will be “the global centre of expertise for carbon sequestration.”

An emerging issue of contention, however, is who should finance the big-bucks green technology.

Canada’s Green party suspects taxpayers will be on the hook for the extensive pipeline infrastructure required by the sequestration process.

In January, a federal-Alberta committee issued a report asserting that carbon capture is a national project similar to the railway and that reproductor mp3 y ipod governments should put up $2 billion to get five new carbon capture and storage facilities operating by 2015.

The report noted that sequestration could address 40 per cent of the country’s C02 emissions by 2050. Canada has pledged to cut its emissions by 60 to 70 per cent by that date.

So far, Canada has been flunking the Kyoto test. In signing the protocol in 1997, Canada undertook to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to six per cent below 1990 levels by the period between 2008 and 2012. But carbon emissions have grown by more than 25 per cent since 1990.

Clearly, carbon sequestration can’t come soon enough. Yet the process has been slow and bureaucratic.

In his February budget, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced a modest $240 million in funding for a $3.8-billion clean-coal power plant in Saskatchewan. The project is to be the largest carbon capture and storage project in Canada.

Environment Minister Jim Baird in March announced new regulations to require carbon-capture technology for any oilsands projects that begin operations in 2012. At that point coal-fired plants, too, would need to capture the bulk of their carbon dioxide emissions for underground storage.

The Stelmach government, keen to protect Alberta industry from any new costs imposed by Ottawa, in April announced creation of a council to “develop a roadmap for implementing carbon capture and storage.”

Michael Halbherr, the head of Nokia’s location-based activities, told Reuters he remains comfortable with Nokia’s year-old goal for seeing up to 50 percent of its phones equipped with global positioning system (GPS) chips in 2010 to 2012.

“We are planning to ship 35 million GPS units this year,” Halbherr said, adding “and many more location-enabled phones that use cell-towers to orient themselves on the map.”

“You will see few ‘E’ or ‘N’ Series phones without GPS,” he said.

Last year Nokia sold 437 million phones, and it expects the volume to grow more than 10 percent this year. It sold 38 million phones in its multimedia range “N Series” and some 7 million “E Series” business phones televisores .

GPS chips use orbiting satellites to pinpoint the whereabouts of a phone user, thereby enabling a host of location-based services. SiRF Technology Holdings Inc (SIRF.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is the world’s largest maker of GPS chips audio, tv y mp3 .

The design

SO HOW does B&W get such delicious sound from a package that’s about twice the size of an AFL football?

The answer is: by a studied blend of cabinet shape, choice of materials and construction, the type of speakers used and the quality of the amplification.

The 61cm elongated Hindenburg airship shape is inspired acoustic engineering that minimises the type of resonances created by speakers as they fire back inside a traditional rectangular cabinet.

The specs

THE five drivers chosen for the Zep include a 13cm Kevlar bass driver powered by a dedicated 50-watt amplifier.

On either side is a 9cm mid-range driver. The high frequencies are provided by two 25mm metal-dome tweeters built into the pointy ends of the Zep’s rigid polymer and stainless-steel chassis.

Two 25-watt amplifiers generate power to the mid-range and tweeter drivers.

Inputs are a 30-pin iPod connector, USB 2.0 and a 3.5mm analogue and digital audio jack. Outputs for video are S-Video and composite.

The iPod dock is centred on the Zeppelin’s front chassis.

Installation is dead easy. Slot an iPod (any model back to 3G is compatible) into the friction-fit dock, press the Zep’s power switch and control via the supplied remote.

The only thing to irk an iPod devotee is the lack of a full-featured interface for the iPod. The supplied remote is rather basic and only controls power on/off, volume, mute, play/pause and track forward or back.

Selection of anything else — such as playlists, albums or artists — has to be done manually on the iPod.

The verdict

AFTER a few wet ones, Froggy was hooked as much by the Zep’s looks as the sound of Stairway to Heaven (no, not the bloody Rolf Harris version) filling my kitchen . . . but hopefully not so smitten he’d nick the review sample.

MacReagan wants one to go with his plasma, already hidden from his ex’s lawyers.

And though Wolfie wasn’t about to revise his low opinion of the iPod, he admits B&W’s Zeppelin is a little bit special.

That didn’t stop him loudly agreeing with one smarty-pants post at an audio forum: “It would make a great suppository for an elephant.”

The Nokia N series smart phone offers so much more fun than mere chatting, and the eight-gigabyte N95 launched recently by Rogers is no exception. Flip it sideways and it shoots five-megapixel photos like a regular handheld digital camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a 20X zoom. The 2.8-inch (seven centimetre) screen can flip between landscape and portrait or upright modes and lets you watch videos or TV, surf the web, or just listen to music.
